Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Golfcraft started as a home business in 1989. In 1992 we moved to the F Street shop. It's now my plan to move back to our new home shop and continue to serve our thousands of loyal customers on a slightly more leisurely program. I don't see why I would ever stop doing what I do; it's the most fun I've ever had working! We're easy to find now in Shafter, so always call first when you need us - 205-2508. Ken Hurlbert, Owner
What is your primary product or service?
If it has to do with golf clubs we pretty much do it. Custom fitting following the same processes used when sponsors fit tour professionals, building clubs from only pro-line components, and guaranteeing performance of what we build. We also do all repairs, refitting, regripping, etc.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
This business started after I suffered a major heart attack in 1987. I was a manager with Prudential here in town, and I was nowhere near ready to retire. I tried to go back, but there was apparently too much stress, so I started doing woodwork in my home shop. A chance encounter with a golfer at North Kern made me aware that you could buy parts and build golf clubs. "Fitting" had no real meaning for me, but a series of events led me to be professionally fitted by a clubfitter who normally fit only tour pros. I built the clubs he prescribed, with a lot of his help, and to make a long story short, after shooting around 90 for 27 years, my first round with my new clubs was 79! I started scoring in the 70's regularly and ultimately I was asked by other golfers if I would build them clubs. With the help of the fitter who fit me, I did, and it worked fantastically well. Ultimately I got the training I needed and Golfcraft was off and running in my garage shop on B Street. In less than 2 years we had to move to the store you may remember on F Street, and the rest is history.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We're pretty much it in this area. There have been others over the years, but, frankly, the thing that differentiates us is also the reason we're still here. We guarantee performance on all the clubs we fit and build. If there's a problem after our customer takes delivery, we work with them until the problem is solved.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have only the one location now, although there were plans to expand years ago. I've often thought that it was a good thing we didn't complicate things with multiple locations, because then too much of my personal time would have been spent being an executive and not a clubfitter/clubmaker with time to work one-on-one with my customers. Now, 29 years later, we're back to a home shop where it all began.
Provide detailed directions to your location
The home shop was in Westchester, but became part of the 24th St. widening project! We found a perfect home and shop in Shafter so always call when you need help - cell 205-2508. Doing it by appointment will save you time and money.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept checks, and yes, even cash. We ask for a minimum deposit of 50% on custom orders when we are purchasing special components for the order. We've stopped paying to take cards, but cash or checks seem to be working just fine and saves you about 5%!.
Which areas do you service?
Our primary territory is the Southern San Joaquin Valley (Delano to Arvin, Bakersfield, etc.), but our customers frequently travel to our location from many miles away. We have customers from all over California, from another 28 states and over 30 countries at last count. Our website (nobogeys.com) attracts golfers from everywhere.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I own the company, and am now the sole club person here. My wife, Karen, helps when I need it, and I have helpers who I can also count on when necessary. When the new home shop is running full steam, I plan to find and train an experienced clubmaker to help out whenever needed.
What are your hours of operation?
One of the main attractions of a home shop is NO FIXED HOURS! Actually, if you think of us as your golf club doctor and always call ahead for an appointment, everyone will save time and enjoy better service. And because of reduced overhead, you can expect lower prices too.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
It's when a customer I've done work for brings in a friend or relative to buy clubs or get maintenance. I'm delighted too, because my customer has often explained it all before they arrived, and that can save lots of time. My best salespeople and most vocal supporters are the golfers who've been coming in for the past 29 years.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." I know that's almost cliche, but what verse provides so much information and truth in so few words.
